Electrical Fire Breaks Out in Holborn

Around 2,000 office workers in the Holborn area have been evacuated this afternoon due to a major electrical fire under the Civil Aviation Authority building.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to the scene at around 12:40PM to attend a blaze. The cause is thought to be an electrical junction box below street level.

Pictures from various Twitter users show the streets around Holborn filled with a thick dark smoke. The LFB tweeted at 3PM, “Around 2,000 people evacuated from buildings near cable fire on #kingsway. Crews waiting for power to be switched off.”

The streets surrounding the blaze have been closed off and Holborn station was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Power to several offices has been shut off whilst the LFB are in the area.

Various Twitter users have been tweeting their photos of the area as the police re-direct traffic.

Later in the afternoon a roaring flame could be seen coming out of a man hole on Kingsway. Holborn station will be re-opening before rush hour however Kingsway will still be closed until further notice.
